Engineering Maintenance

The qualification consists of:

  • SVQ2 in Performing Engineering Operations (SCQF 5)

This is a foundation course where you learn the basics of the workshop, e.g. How to safely use drills, hand tools, bench fitting, lathes etc. Completed at college in year one.

  • National Certificate in Engineering Practice (SCQF 5)

This course has a mixture of classroom and workshop units. You will learn about creating and following drawings, different types of welding, about engineering materials, workshop skills, using IT and more. Completed at college in year one.

  • SVQ3 in Engineering Maintenance (Mechanical) (SCQF 6)

This more specialised qualification is gained by gathering evidence from your work over three years. Every job has the chance of covering some of the required tasks e.g. demonstrating safe use of equipment, problem solving, trying ideas, installing a new part. You write short reports to cover the outcomes and deliver these to your college assessor.

Modern Apprenticeship:

The Modern Apprenticeship is awarded by Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance (SEMTA). The MA is awarded when you have completed the three qualifications and three years ‘time served’.


The apprenticeship take a minimum of 3 to 4 Years

Attendance at College:

Year 1

30 weeks at NAFC, Scalloway to complete SVQ2 PEO and NC Engineering Practice.

Years 2-4

Work based, working on SVQ3 portfolio. Go to college once a month. Assessor visits.

Typical duties will include:

Complying with health and safety requirements, interpreting engineering data and documentation and conducting work to suit requirements, carrying out fault diagnosis, producing, restoring and replacing components and working effectively and efficiently in engineering.


Personal Qualities, Skills and Qualifications

  • An interest in practical engineering, problem solving and working in a team.
  • Good manual dexterity, co-ordination and an eye for detail are essential.
  • Physically able to perform the range of tasks involved.
  • A mature outlook and willing to work with other people at other levels of the business.
