The qualification consists of:

Modern Apprenticeship in Construction Building

Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3 (SCQF 6) Wood Occupations (Construction): Carpentry & Joinery.

Professional Development Award in Carpentry and Joinery

 

Modern Apprenticeship

The qualification is accredited through the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

 

Duration

The apprenticeship scheme is run over 4 years with attendance at Shetland College.

 

Attendance at College

Block release to Shetland College is as follows:

Year 1 – 19 weeks in aprox. 4-week blocks

Year 2 – 11 weeks in aprox. 4-week blocks

Year 3 & 4 – Work based and one day each month at college

Practical Assessments

Skills Test

While in the workplace trainees will build up a portfolio of evidence of their competence at work.

 

Typical duties include:

Making windows and doors, fitting skirting boards and facings, assembling wooden structures for houses, roofing and other general building work.

 

Personal Qualities, Skills and Qualifications

Ideally, applicants should have good National 5s (or Credit Standard Grades) in subjects such as Maths, Physics, Graphical Communications & Craft and Design.

Good co-ordination and dexterity is essential.

Applicants must be physically able for the tasks involved in the job.

 

Note: This qualification can only be delivered by Train Shetland if the employer requesting training is not an affiliated member of CITB.
