The qualification consists of: -

HNC in Construction Management / Architectural Technology/Built Environment

SVQ 3 (SCQF 6) in Build Environment Design

If the job role is sufficient SVQ 4 (SCQF 9)  – Build Environment Design Management

Modern Apprenticeship
The qualification is accredited and awarded through the SQA & CITB

Duration
The apprenticeship scheme is run over 4 years with attendance at Shetland College through video-conference lectures for HNC Construction Management & or block release attendance at Inverness College in year 3 & 4

Attendance at College

Year 1 & 2 – Video conferencing at Shetland/ block release Inverness

Year 3 & 4 – Work based

While in the workplace trainees will build up a portfolio of evidence of their competence at work and submit this evidence to their assessor – who will visit the workplace every 2 months.

Typical duties include: -
Working on drawings and plans – mostly Computer Aided Draughting; Measuring sizes and collating information; Surveying; Meeting with contractors; Work on specifications for plans e.g. drainage, electrical; Working with planning applications; Building Control; Administration tasks such as inputting information into databases and spreadsheets; Work is mainly office based with surveying work on site.

Personal qualities, skills and qualifications:

  • Applicants should have Highers in subjects such as Maths, Physics, Graphical Communications and Craft & Design
  • Must have dedication and self discipline
  • Have a mature outlook
